Prior to joining the landscape architecture faculty in 1980, John
Crone acquired extensive experience in landscape design and regional
planning, working as a self-employed landscape architect and with
Gerald F. Kessler and Associates in Denver, Colo., Bodfan Gruffydd in
London, England and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in
Atlanta, Ga. He also taught at Lincoln College in Christchurch, New
Zealand.
As the director of the landscape architecture department from 1987 -
1993, John Crone secured a $5 million bequest that became Garvan
Woodland Gardens and achieved full national accreditation status for
the department. Crone teaches design and construction courses
throughout the landscape architecture curriculum, placing an emphasis
on community planning, housing and sustainable design. His current
research focuses on sustainable community design and the relationship
between community planning and sustainable agriculture. Crone has
presented numerous invited lectures at national and international
conferences and has published more than 30 articles on a wide range of
topics. He has won two departmental teaching awards and a School of
Architecture Faculty Writing Award. Crone is active in the American
Society of Landscape Architects and is a member of several professional
honor societies.
Crone served as head of the Washington County Planning Board from 1991
- 98 and has been a member of the City of Fayetteville's Tree and
Landscape Committee since 2004.
