Since
coming to the University of Arkansas School of Architecture in 2006, Pia
Sarpaneva has taught architectural design in first, second and
fifth year design studios. Her teaching career began in her native Finland
where she taught Basics of Architecture at Helsinki University of Technology
from 1989-94. In the United States she has taught at the College of
Architecture and Urban Studies in Virginia Tech, teaching across programs and
studio levels from 1994-2003. There she received the College Certificate for
Excellence in Teaching in 1997 and the Certificate of Appreciation for
International Education in 2000. Sarpaneva also taught undergraduate and
graduate design studios at Washington University in St. Louis from 2003-2006.
From
1986- 94 Pia Sarpaneva was associated professionally with Helin & Siitonen,
one of Finland’s leading design offices. Her main focus was housing design and
architectural competitions. A number of these built and unbuilt projects have
been published in books, magazines and exhibitions. She served in the editorial
board of ARK (Finnish Architectural Review) from 1996-2000.
Sarpaneva
has co-chaired and organized seven architectural symposia, directed two
academic summer programs, and served as a guest critic in numerous
universities.
