Greg Herman

Gregory Herman received his M. Arch. degree from Rice University, where he was awarded the William Dunlap Darden Medal, and his B. Arch. degree from the University of Cincinnati. After working in various cities, he continued professional practice in Boston, while also teaching at the Boston Architectural Center. He has been an invited juror at several schools of architecture including those at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of New Mexico. He has also served as visiting faculty at Auburn University's School of Architecture. Since joining the faculty at the University of Arkansas School of Architecture in 1991, he has been a three-time recipient of the Mott Outstanding Teacher Award, and was awarded the Tau Sigma Delta medal in 2007. He is a fellow in the University of Arkansas Teaching Academy, a select group of 70 outstanding teachers on campus. Involved in the development of design/build projects, he recently worked with students to redesign ‘Miss Gloria’s Kitchen,’ a New Orleans restaurant that has been gutted and shuttered since Hurricane Katrina flooded the city.

Active in a number of professional service organizations, Herman currently serves on the board of CITYbuild Consortium of Schools, which seeks to facilitate community building in New Orleans and other areas facing crisis.  He has also served as Director of the Southwest Region / Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). His ongoing research includes inspections into the advent and development of American builders' handbooks since the seventeenth century, with a particular focus on the influence of those guides upon the development of American architectures and technologies, the introduction of new materials, and the developments of new building techniques. His research has been presented at scholarly conferences including those sponsored by the Southeast Society of Architectural Historians, the Western Social Science Association and ACSA.
