Facilities and labs

The School of Architecture is housed in two richly historic buildings located in the heart of campus. Vol Walker Hall, once the campus library, is located near the University’s trademark, Old Main, and is home to the Department of Architecture. The Department of Landscape Architecture is located nearby in Memorial Hall, originally the student union.

C. Murray Smart Media Center

The C. Murray Smart Media Center, located in Vol Walker Hall, maintains an extensive slide collection and growing digital image database for teaching, research support and course preparation. The center's primary objective is to provide multi-media support to faculty and students. Media center staff members provide access to and assistance with laptop computers, digital cameras, still photography equipment, digital video cameras and projectors, slide and flatbed scanners, slide projectors and imaging software.

Visualization Lab

The Visualization Lab allows student and faculty to transform software files into three-dimensional designs. The lab houses a three-axis computer numerically controlled (CNC) router/cutter, two laser cutters and four computer workstations. The CNC router is equipped with a 5’ W x 10’ L x 6” D milling bed and vacuum table. The router accepts two- and three-dimensional digital files and may be used to mill wood, polystyrene, cast plastics, aluminum, copper and brass. The laser cutters may be used to cut paper, vinyl and soft woods such as birch and basswood. A student technician is available to assist with hardware and software. Hours of operation vary by semester. Typically the lab is open during afternoons, evenings and on weekends.

Materials Shop

The Materials Shop supports construction projects ranging from light fixtures and furniture to three-dimensional models. The facility is staffed by one full-time technician and is available to students and faculty for design, coursework, and research projects. The workshop houses multiple table saws, band-saws, chop saw, scroll saw, drill presses, jointer, planer, lathe, belt sanders, metal break and many hand tools. The materials lab is open from 9 a.m. — 5 p.m. MWF and from 3 p.m. — 7 p.m. TTH. All students must complete a one-hour safety orientation before using the lab.
