Feb. 22, Derek Linn, 'Preservation Through Documentation'

Derek Linn

Historic & Unique Gas Stations of the Arkansas Ozarks: A Photographical Documentation -is a travel, research, and preservation-through-documentation project. Various roadside points of interest have kept my attention through the years, especially that of historic bridges, churches, and gas stations. Upon selecting gas station sites as my subject, I considered their relative lack of attention in publications and the National Historic Register, as well as my personal passion for discovering and viewing them. A companion to the roadway and driver—for better or worse—the gas station remains a symbol of travel and “open road freedom” in the United States. Arkansas’ roadways are no exception, and those who appreciate the architectural and cultural significance of these structures would likely agree that historic gas stations today stand as symbols of the past—at the mercy of weather, evolution, and time. Love the old or prefer the new, the historic have a story to tell and this photographical documentation project is intended to serve as a decent step toward capturing some of these stories so that they might be passed on.
