Mark Boyer and Students Install 15 (Mock) Green Roofs

mock green roof installation

The mock green roofs are installed at the Watershed Research and Education Center, located at the University of Arkansas Agriculture Experiment Station.

The University of Arkansas campus just got 15 more green roofs. Though the roofs are small, measuring just 4 feet square, they promise to yield major new data on the best growing media for green roofs and how green roofs absorb and filter water and chemicals.

The interdisciplinary project team includes Mark Boyer, chair of the landscape architecture department; Channon Toland, a graduate of the landscape architecture program who is now pursuing a master's degree in environmental science, and Brian Haggard, a professor in the departments of biological and agricultural engineering and crop, soil and environmental sciences.

"We've got synergy here," Mark Boyer said. "Here's Brian, with expertise in science and monitoring; myself, with an interest in obtaining data on green rofs to document their benefits; and a student capable of bridging both of our backgrounds. With our shared interest and know-how we will produce something publishable."

An added benefit? Boyer's landscape architecture students, who helped install the panels, are getting hands-on experience in sustainable design research. To learn more and view photos, visit Boyer's new green roof Web site.
