School Faculty, Alumni Dominate 2008 State AIA Awards

School of Architecture faculty dominated this year’s slate of Arkansas American Institute of Architects awards, winning two of the three top honors, and one of two additional awards. The awards were announced Friday, Oct. 24 at the Arkansas AIA chapter’s annual meeting, which took place in Hot Springs this year.

“Three out of five ain’t bad,” said Dean Jeff Shannon with a grin. “Of course the other two award winners are alumni of our program.”

Professor Marlon Blackwell won two Honor Awards, one for his renovation of the Fulbright Building (the former Fayetteville Public Library) and one for his transformation of a 100-year-old hardware store into a new, modern library for Gentry, Ark. The University of Arkansas Community Design Center won a Citation Award for Porchscapes, the 43-unit sustainable neighborhood that design center staff and students have designed for the Washington County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Tim de Noble’s Bakhita Ridge House and Marlon Blackwell’s Blair residence, both located in Fayetteville, were design finalists.

Firms led by alumni of the School of Architecture also did well: Wilcox Group Architects won an Honor Award for the Arkansas Public Health Laboratory in Little Rock, and Maurice Jennings + David McKee won a Merit Award for the Anthony Trust Carillon Tower located at Garvan Woodland Gardens, the school’s botanical garden in Hot Springs. Jack F. See Jr., a ‘58 graduate of the School of Architecture, won the Fay Jones Gold Medal Award, and David W. Perry, a ’77 graduate of the school, won the Dick Savage Memorial Award.
