Mock green roofs

The mock green roofs are installed at the Watershed Research and Education Center, located at the University of Arkansas Agriculture Experiment Station.

In this experiment Mark Boyer collaborated with Channon Toland, a graduate of the landscape architecture program who is now pursuing a master's degree in environmental science, and Brian Haggard, a professor in the departments of biological and agricultural engineering and crop, soil and environmental sciences. The research team constructed 15 4-foot by 4-foot green roof panels with varied growing media that will allow for much more precise measurement of how green roofs absorb and filter water and chemicals.

"We plan to track growth and collect data for 18 months," Boyer said. "This is a rigorous, controlled experiment that will give us quantifiable data."

Design variants include:

  • 3 mock green roof panels use fines without organic material
  • 3 mock green roof panels use fines with organic material
  • 3 mock roof green panels use coarse growing medium with organic material
  • 3 mock green roof panels use coarse growing medium without organic materials
  • 3 control roofs with a roof membrane only
