Oct. 31, CANstruction competition

While little kids get ready to trick-or-treat Friday, School of Architecture students will be preparing a different kind of Halloween harvest. At 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 they will stage their second annual “CANstruction” competition, in which teams of first-year students and older student mentors vie to create the most imaginative sculpture from non-perishable goods. The event is part of the School of Architecture’s Leadership by Design course, developed to help new students succeed in a demanding program. Last year’s event filled a Chevy Blazer and truck with more than 1300 donated food items for Washington Regional’s Faith in Action Service program.

The event will take place in the Fulbright Peace Fountain plaza in front of Vol Walker Hall. The students have 40 minutes to build their sculptures; prizes will be awarded for Most Cans, Best Use of Labels and Overall Achievement.

“With food costs high and the economy in bad shape, we hope to collect even more canned goods this year,” said Laura Terry, an associate professor of architecture who helps teach the course. Harp's Food Stores, Marvin's IGA Grocers, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club have donated canned goods for this event. This year’s bounty will be donated to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank.
