First Year Students Learn Leadership by Design

Leadership by Design wraps up each semester with a community service project. Last spring Mike Beaulieu helped to erect Greenweave, a 16-foot-high performance space at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Photo by Cory Holbert.

Contrary to popular myth, 24/7 studio time is not the key to succeeding in the School of Architecture. The Leadership by Design program, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Wed., Aug. 27 in Shollmier Hall, shows first-year students how to make a good start. Led by faculty and student mentors, the weekly class features:

  • lectures on time and stress management, nutrition and exercise
  • “true colors” personality profile
  • cultivation of communication and leadership skills
  • participation in cultural and educational events
  • community service/art projects

The course will start this fall with student mentors leading a discussion on what makes an ideal student – and what makes an ideal professor.
