What is GenerativeComponents?
GenerativeComponents is both an application for designers with no programming experience (who want to design by establishing associative relationships between geometric elements) and for designers who are actively interested in exploring the overlap between conventional design and ‘computational’ design (using scripting techniques).
GenerativeComponents design software is both parametric and associative with application to conventional architectural design as well as to more geometrically unconventional architectural forms. This workshop will introduce designers, students, researchers and faculty to the underlying concepts of parametric design and how they can be applied to a variety of design issues.
Why use GenerativeComponents?
The advantage of GenerativeComponents over other parametric modeling software is that it uses associative parameters to create intelligent forms. This enables the designer to set up fairly complex design models using any combination of geometric relations, algebraic expressions, logical dependencies, and scripting techniques to capture and extend one’s essential design intent. These models can be used to rapidly explore formal variations, and analyze the resultant conditions from a range of alternatives.
The iterative process so essential to design development is dramatically expedited and the results more specific than would be possible if each variation was ‘modeled by hand’ with a conventional ‘non-parametric’ CAD application. The modeling data can also be used to prepare geometrical solutions for digital fabrication including laser cutting, routing and stereo-lithography.
