Jan. 28, Bennett Neiman, "Bebop Constructions"

Bennett Neiman
Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas

5:30 p.m., January 28
Shollmier Hall

Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie’s jazz improvisations on the song Leap Frog inspired architect Bennett Neiman to explore layers of space, line, volume and texture. The result is Bebop Constructions, a series of “takes” that abstract musical structure into a theoretical investigation of architectural form.

A professor of architecture at Texas Tech University since 2004, Neiman has developed a series of architectural design and teaching projects that explore improvisation, order and variation on a theme. His design workshops, seminars and studios draw on both traditional media and digital technology.

Bennett Neiman earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Architecture degree from Yale. From 1978 until 1984 he worked for Professor David Niland, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, on several built projects. He subsequently taught architectural design at the University of Colorado at Denver, serving as associate chair of the department from 2001  - 2004. Neiman also has taught at North Dakota State University, Miami University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Tennessee and Roger Williams University.

Neiman’s innovative approach to design education has won national recognition, notably the American Institute of Architects Education Honors Award in 1994 and 1998 and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Faculty Design Award in 1990 and 2006. He was the recipient of the University of Colorado at Denver Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and the College of Architecture and Planning Excellence in Teaching Award in 1994. He received the Texas Tech University Alumni Association New Faculty Award representing the College of Architecture in 2006. His students have won or placed in the annual awards program for digital design conducted by formZ.

Bebop Constructions has been exhibited at universities and conferences across the United States and is currently on display in Vol Walker Hall.
