Frequently asked questions

University Network and File Transfer

1. Question: What is mydocs.uark.edu?

Answer: Network storage provided by Computing Services that will hold 250MB of your personal files. More information can be found on the Computing Services website.

2. Question: How do I access mydocs.uark.edu on campus?

Answer: When you log on to any machine in campus computer labs, the "My Documents" folder automatically points to your mydocs folder.

3. Question: Can I access mydocs from off campus?

Answer: Only by using a secure FTP client such as SSH Secure Shell client or a free FTP client like Filezilla. Point the FTP client to comp.uark.edu and log in with your UA user name and password (the first part of your email address).

4. Question: What is NOSTROMO?

Answer: NOSTROMO is the School of Architecture's print and file server. Several studio classes have space allocated on NOSTROMO for shared project files. Generic instructions for connecting to Nostromo are located here.

5. Question: Can I access NOSTROMO off campus?

Answer: No. NOSTROMO is not accessible outside of the UA Fayetteville network.

Architecture Labs and Computing Resources

1. Question: Why do you charge money to print? Other labs don't do that.

Answer: The School of Architecture uses printing resources that are far more expensive per page (or per square foot, in the case of plotting) than other general access computing labs. Our goal is not to profit; rather, it is an attempt to recoup some (not all) of the extremely high cost of laser printing and large format plotting. Other GACL labs on campus intend to implement printing accounts similar to ours in the near future.

2. Question: How do the printing accounts work?

Answer: Each student in the School of Architecture is given an initial $35 balance at the start of each semester. When you log in to a lab machine in Vol Walker or Memorial Hall, a small icon at the bottom right of your monitor displays your current print account balance. If your account is depleted, you may deposit additional funds at selected times during the week (Wed and Fri, 3-5pm for ARCH; Tue and Thu, 3-5pm for LARC). Deposits are accepted in the form of cash or personal checks made out to the University of Arkansas.

3. Question: How do I get access to the VIZ_LAB?

4. Question: How do I get help printing in the labs?

Answer: Ask me. I am in my office much of the day. If I'm not there, find me or email me. Don't forget to ask other students for help. There are many experts available.

5. Question: My stupid computer keeps locking up; I can't get on the internet; This lab computer is very slow. Can you help me?

Answer: Yes. I can help you. First, try to find me in my office. If I'm not there, you should see a dial indicating where I am or when I'll be back. Next, email me at archlabs@uark.edu. I check that mailbox very often. I will reply to you.
