School of Architecture students and faculty have constructed
16 design/build projects, including a bi-level fishing pier and boat dock, a pavilion and
outdoor learning center for local schools,
four homes for low-income families and amenities for parks and camps.
These projects introduce students to
the rigors of real-world design. "Now I know how structures work,” said
Rachel Smith (B.Arch. ’07), who helped to build a 22-foot-high, fully
accessible tree house for Camp Aldersgate, a Little Rock camp that
serves children with special needs. “I've learned how to develop a
design into something that can actually be built and used."
Students also learn the satisfaction to be gained from community
service. “Where idealism and action come together, that’s the exciting
point,” said Jared Hueter (B.Arch. ’07), who initiated two design-build
projects during his School of Architecture career.
Private gifts have supported design/build projects in Fayetteville, New Orleans and Little Rock.
