The following tips are for architecture and landscape architecture students. (Interior design students can click here for computer specifications.)
When should I buy? Computer-aided design is introduced in the second
year of study. It is recommended that you wait until then to purchase
your computer, so that you have the most up-to-date and powerful system
possible. (There are computer labs across campus that you can use to
complete other coursework). A document outlining computer specifications
and required software will be distributed at the end of your first year
of study. To stay current on the CAD and building software that you
will need, plan on purchasing yearly licenses or downloading frequent
updates. Check out software resources for more information.
What should I buy?
It’s a given that the computer industry is constantly evolving. Buy
with an eye towards future upgrades – the Fay Jones School of Architecture is
committed to exposing students to the most current graphic visualization
technology available.
Here are a few key questions to ask before
handing over the credit card: Laptop vs. desktop? (the school recommends
desktop models due to lower cost and increased adaptability; see
computer specifications, below) How much RAM (random access memory) can
be added in the future? Can a second hard drive be added? Are there
extra slots for peripheral ports (for a scanner, printer, etc.)?
Plan to upgrade your system regularly.
To keep current with the latest software, which always requires more
powerful computers, you should plan on purchasing a new computer every
third or fourth year. For details on minimum hardware and software
requirements, accessories, and tips on buying software at educational
prices, check out the latest school of architecture computer specifications for architecture and landscape architecture students (pdf download). (Interior design students should click here for their specifications.)
